Auckland University Medical Students’ Association (AUMSA)

AUMSA is a Students’ Association specifically for the medical students of the University of Auckland. Run by medical students, the organisation aims to represent and advocate for students, not only within the medical school, but also to the university and at the national level.

AUMSA has two main roles.

Firstly, by acting as a ‘student voice’, AUMSA endeavours to represent each medical student, addressing the concerns and opinions of the student body. A close liaison with faculty members of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences means that AUMSA is a highly effective medium through which to improve curriculum and implement changes to the day-to-day running of the Medical School. At a national level, association with both the New Zealand Medical Students’ Association (NZMSA) and the New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA), means representation of medical studentsat the highest levels. AUMSA also provides support to medical studentsvia services such as Travel Scholarships for career advancement.

Secondly, AUMSA is responsible for organising events throughout the academic year. AUMSA organises events such as the Annual Medical Ball, Freshers Camp, Medical Revue, Pub Quizzes and Pub-Crawls, as well as frequent Sporting Events and Dance classes. The medical school student magazine, ‘New Doctor’, is also provided by AUMSA. Welfare and educational programmes are provided each year, including the prestigious Futures in Medicine Seminar, Health Seminarsand Career Information Evenings.

AUMSA is an incredibly important organisation for medical students to join, providing support, advocacy, entertainment, and discounted prices to members. AUMSA also offers joint membership with the NZMA and the NZMSA, helping to ensure quality advocacy and representation throughout all years of medical school (and beyond!).
